Exeter Chiefs: Chairman Tony Rowe on the Hunt for New Investment (2026)

In a striking turn of events, Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe is on the hunt for new investment as the club grapples with a staggering financial loss of £10.3 million. This is an urgent situation that has raised eyebrows among fans and financial analysts alike, sparking a conversation about the club’s future and its performance in the league.

Last season proved to be particularly tough for the Exeter Rugby Group, which reported this significant after-tax deficit while the Chiefs found themselves languishing at ninth place in the top tier of English rugby—an unprecedented low for the club. One of the main contributors to this financial downturn was the necessity to write off a £6.2 million loan. This loan was tied to a hotel located on the Sandy Park grounds, which Rowe had acquired from the club back in December 2022. The purchase was part of a strategy to alleviate some of the club's mounting Covid-19 related debts, as Exeter is still managing several loans taken out during the pandemic when matches were held without spectators.

If not for the loan write-off, the pre-tax losses would have stood at just over £3 million—a sharp increase of over £2.5 million compared to the previous year. Additionally, turnover saw a decline of approximately £1.5 million, while payroll expenses within the group rose by £1.4 million.

Interestingly, despite the challenges on the field, income generated from conferences and events at Sandy Park remained stable, totaling just over £2.5 million. In contrast, the rugby division suffered a revenue drop exceeding £1.5 million, primarily due to disappointing performances that led to decreased attendance at games.

"I firmly believe that within the next two to three years we will find ourselves back at the top, contending for Twickenham and aiming for the European Championship final," Rowe shared during an interview with BBC Radio Devon. He remains optimistic about the club's prospects, emphasizing that although it has taken time to recover, there is still immense potential for growth at Exeter.

Rowe is particularly hopeful about a proposed new franchise model for English rugby's elite division, which he believes could boost interest in investing in the club. Having led Exeter since 1998, his business acumen has played a pivotal role in transforming the team from the lower leagues to the top echelon of domestic rugby. Under his leadership, which included the expansion of Sandy Park after the club moved there in 2006, Exeter Chiefs have secured two Premiership titles and the prestigious European Champions Cup in 2020.

However, having divested from many of his other business ventures, Rowe acknowledges that it's time for fresh leadership. "I’ve relished my 30 years at the helm of the club, using my association with Exeter Chiefs to enhance my business interests, which enabled me to support the club financially," he noted.

Yet, he asserts, "We’re at a critical juncture now; the club needs to evolve, and we are actively seeking an investor. If I were 20 or 30 years younger, I would seize the opportunity without hesitation."

He foresees that the club will require financial backing over the next few years as they approach the proposed franchise model, likely to be implemented in about four years. Rowe mentioned that he is currently in discussions with various interested parties, including a London-based firm assisting them in finding suitable investors. "We are exploring options with several interested individuals, and we hope to make decisive choices regarding our path forward in the first or second quarter of this year."

This situation presents a critical moment for Exeter Chiefs—will they secure the necessary investment to rise from their current struggles, or will they face further setbacks? What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
